Canapes



Canapés are bite-sized appetizers composed of four main elements: a base, a spread, a main ingredient, and a garnish. They can be served cold, hot, or at room temperature. While the ingredients are simple, the presentation and layering of flavors are what make canapés an elegant addition to any event.

 

Canapés originated in 18th-century France, with the name coming from the French word for "sofa". The term was inspired by how the toppings on the small pieces of food resembled people sitting on a sofa. These appetizers became popular at aristocratic gatherings and were a way to stimulate the appetite before a meal

Vegetarian Canapés

1. Caprese Skewers

  • Ingredients: Cherry tomatoes, mini mozzarella balls, fresh basil, balsamic glaze, toothpicks

  • Instructions: Thread tomato, basil, mozzarella on a toothpick. Drizzle with balsamic glaze.

  • Tip: Colorful and fresh, great for a light starter.


2. Roasted Red Pepper & Feta Tartlets

  • Ingredients: Mini phyllo cups, feta, roasted red peppers, olive oil, fresh thyme

  • Instructions: Fill tartlets with feta & pepper mix, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle thyme.


3. Spinach & Cream Cheese Mushrooms

  • Ingredients: Large mushroom caps, cream cheese, sautéed spinach, garlic, parmesan

  • Instructions: Mix cream cheese with sautéed spinach and garlic, fill caps, sprinkle parmesan, bake 10–12 min.


4. Cucumber & Herb Cheese Bites

  • Ingredients: Cucumber slices, herbed cream cheese, dill sprigs

  • Instructions: Spread cream cheese on cucumber rounds, top with dill.

  • Tip: Refreshing and crunchy; serve chilled.


5. Bruschetta with Tomato & Basil

  • Ingredients: Baguette slices, tomatoes, garlic, basil, olive oil

  • Instructions: Toast baguette, top with tomato-basil mixture, drizzle olive oil.

6. Smoked Salmon & Dill Cream Cheese
  • Ingredients: Crackers, cream cheese, dill, lemon zest, smoked salmon, capers

  • Instructions: Spread cream cheese mixture, top with salmon and caper.


7. Mini Crab Cakes with Lemon Aioli

  • Ingredients: Crab meat, breadcrumbs, egg, mayo, Dijon, parsley, oil

  • Instructions: Form mini cakes, fry until golden, serve with lemon aioli.


8. Shrimp & Avocado Cups

  • Ingredients: Mini phyllo cups, cooked shrimp, mashed avocado, lime juice, cilantro

  • Instructions: Fill cups with avocado, top with shrimp and cilantro.


9. Tuna Tartare on Wonton Crisps

  • Ingredients: Fresh tuna, soy sauce, sesame oil, green onion, wonton crisps

  • Instructions: Dice tuna, mix with seasoning, place on crisp wontons, garnish with microgreens.


10. Smoked Trout & Horseradish

  • Ingredients: Rye crackers, smoked trout, horseradish cream, dill

  • Instructions: Spread horseradish cream, top with trout, garnish with dill.

11.  & Fig Crostini
  • Ingredients: Baguette slices, goat cheese, figs, prosciutto, honey

  • Instructions: Toast bread, spread goat cheese, top with fig & prosciutto, drizzle honey.


12. Mini Beef Wellington Bites

  • Ingredients: Puff pastry, beef tenderloin, mushroom duxelles, Dijon

  • Instructions: Wrap seared beef with duxelles in pastry, bake until golden.


13. Chicken & Avocado Canapés

  • Ingredients: Crackers or tortilla rounds, cooked chicken, mashed avocado, lime, cilantro

  • Instructions: Spread avocado on base, top with chicken and cilantro.


14. Bacon & Cheddar Potato Rounds

  • Ingredients: Mini baked potatoes, cheddar, cooked bacon, chives

  • Instructions: Halve potatoes, top with cheese and bacon, bake until melty, sprinkle chives.


15. Spicy Chorizo & Manchego Bites

  • Ingredients: Slices of baguette, cooked chorizo, manchego cheese, roasted red pepper

  • Instructions: Toast bread, layer cheese and chorizo, finish with roasted pepper slice.

  • Arrange by color and height for a visually appealing platter.

  • Use small garnishes like microgreens, herbs, or edible flowers.

  • Prepare most elements ahead of time; assemble right before serving.
